The National Football League has announced plans to host at least three regular-season games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, over the next five years, beginning in 2026. This initiative marks a significant expansion of the league's international footprint, building upon previous games held in São Paulo. The inaugural game is set to take place at the historic Maracanã Stadium, a venue renowned for hosting major global events, including the 1950 and 2014 FIFA World Cups and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Brazil has emerged as a key market for the NFL, boasting a fan base of over 36 million. Teams such as the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, and Philadelphia Eagles already have marketing rights in Brazil under the NFL's global markets program. The league's international strategy has included 56 games played in cities like Frankfurt, London, Mexico City, Munich, São Paulo, and Toronto. Upcoming 2025 games are also scheduled in Dublin, Berlin, Madrid, and London. Additionally, 2026 will see Australia host its first NFL regular-season game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed enthusiasm about expanding to Rio, highlighting the city's global significance and large football fan base. He emphasized the league's commitment to growing its presence in South America and strengthening relationships with fans in Brazil and across the continent.

The announcement has been met with positive reactions from local officials. Rio's Mayor Eduardo Paes welcomed the deal, noting its cultural significance and the inclusion of the games in the city's official event calendar. He highlighted the potential economic and tourism benefits that hosting NFL games could bring to Rio de Janeiro.

As the NFL continues to expand its global reach, the games in Rio de Janeiro represent a strategic move to tap into the growing interest in American football in South America. Fans in Brazil can look forward to experiencing the excitement of live NFL action in their home country, further solidifying the league's international presence.
