NFL Preseason Sees Significant Viewership Boost Amidst League Developments

The National Football League has experienced a notable surge in preseason television ratings, with an average of 2.2 million viewers per game across major networks, marking a 17% increase from the previous year and the highest since 2018. This uptick in viewership comes as the league continues to expand its media presence and address various internal matters.

In a significant move to enhance its broadcasting capabilities, the NFL has agreed to acquire NFL Network, RedZone, and NFL Fantasy from ESPN Inc. for an undisclosed amount, pending regulatory approval. As part of the deal, the NFL will obtain a 10% equity stake in ESPN. This acquisition is expected to bolster the league's media rights revenue, which has already reached nearly $110 billion over 11 years, more than doubling previous contracts.

Internationally, the NFL is strengthening its global footprint. Sky Sports has signed a new three-year agreement with the league to broadcast live games in the UK and Ireland through the 2027 season. This deal includes all London and European games, reflecting a 50% increase in the number of live matches available to subscribers. Notably, the agreement marks the 30th anniversary of Sky’s partnership with the NFL, which began in 1995.

On the field, the NFL is taking proactive steps to maintain the integrity of the game by involving approximately 20 retired players in educating current athletes about the league's gambling policies. This initiative aims to prevent violations and protect the sport's reputation, especially in light of the legalization of sports betting in numerous states.

Additionally, the league is addressing player conduct issues. Shilo Sanders, a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety, was fined $4,669 for throwing a punch during a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on August 23, 2025. The incident led to Sanders' ejection from the game and his subsequent release from the team. Head coach Todd Bowles criticized the action as inexcusable, emphasizing that such behavior is not tolerated in the league.

As the NFL prepares for the upcoming regular season, these developments highlight the league's efforts to enhance its media presence, expand its global reach, and uphold the standards of the game both on and off the field.
